Specifically, the purposes of this study are to (1) identify the types of nominalization used in “The Psychology of Money” book, and (2) identify the types of suffixes used to form the nominalization. The qualitative method was employed to explain the types of nominalizations using Halliday’s theory and the types of suffixes using Quirk’s theory. The data of this analysis were obtained from the first ten chapters of The Psychology of Money book. The results show that there are 864 nominalization words used in the book. The most dominant type (737 cases) is verb-to-noun nominalization and the rest (127 cases) is adjective-to-noun. All types of suffixes are used to create the formation of both verb-to-noun and adjective-to-noun. The findings contribute to enriching the knowledge of grammar, especially nominalization. Besides, it practically can be used for teaching and writing references.
Elah Jalilah, Zewitra Copyright (c) 2023 Jurnal Bahasa Inggris Terapan https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://jurnal.polban.ac.id/ojs-3.1.2/inggris/article/view/4916 Fri, 24 Nov 2023 09:16:20 +0700 An Analysis of Grammatical and Mechanical Errors in LIUNIC ON THINGS Products’ Captions https://jurnal.polban.ac.id/ojs-3.1.2/inggris/article/view/4905
Captions are one of the most important elements in social media because they can provide context, add narrative, or engage the audience with the posted content. However, captions that are written sometimes do not comply with the language rules used. This study aims to identify the kinds of grammatical and mechanical errors found in the captions of LIUNIC ON THINGS. The study applied theories from Dulay, Burt, and Krashen's Surface Strategy Taxonomy (1982), Warriner and Griffith (1973), and Mitchell (2008). This study applied a document analysis method; the process of reviewing and evaluating documents both printed and electronic in a methodical manner. This method is useful for identifying, categorizing, analyzing, and interpreting physical data to gain understanding and come to a conclusion. From the data collection, it was found that there were 66 grammatical errors and 61 mechanical errors in 50 captions released in 2022. The results revealed that the grammatical errors found in its Instagram caption are 63.6% of misformation, 25.8% of omission, 6.1% of misordering, and 4.5% of addition. The mechanical errors, on the other hand, are 50.8% of punctuation errors, 44.3% of capitalization errors, and 4.9% of spelling errors. It can be seen that misformation is the most common grammatical error, and punctuation is the most common mechanical error. The result of this study is expected to be used as one of the evaluation resources for social media caption makers to prevent the occurrence of grammatical and mechanical errors.
Muhamad Julio Moreno, Lina Meilinda, Krisna Yudha Bakhti Copyright (c) 2024 Jurnal Bahasa Inggris Terapan https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://jurnal.polban.ac.id/ojs-3.1.2/inggris/article/view/4905 Fri, 19 Jan 2024 09:51:38 +0700 The Influencers’ Language on Instagram and Twitter Captions https://jurnal.polban.ac.id/ojs-3.1.2/inggris/article/view/5706
The major objective of this study is to analyze grammatical errors found on Instagram and Twitter captions. It is intended to recognize the most common grammatical errors so that we can be aware of the language that we use. The present study applies the theory of Dulay et al (1982) which divides errors into four types: omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering. Since all of the data are in the form of text, a method of textual analysis was applied to analyze the data. The data under analysis are taken from the captions by influencers using English on Instagram and Twitter. The result of the study showed there were 152 errors found from 100 captions and they were classified into misinformation (46%), misordering (3%), addition (16%), and omission (35%). The errors were also classified into grammatical units. Those errors in grammatical units are subject-verb agreement with a total of 16 errors, singular-plural with 15 errors, tense/verb form with 31 errors, word form with 23 errors, capitalization with 28 errors, apostrophe error with 25 errors, missing comma with six errors, article usage error with three errors, wrong/missing preposition with four errors, and word use error with two errors. The most grammatical error that frequently occurs in the Instagram caption is tense/verb with 23 (22%) occurrences and a total of 17 (30%) occurrences of apostrophe errors on Twitter.
Hermayanti Rahma Nurfausyahbani, Dedy Setiawan Copyright (c) 2024 Jurnal Bahasa Inggris Terapan https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://jurnal.polban.ac.id/ojs-3.1.2/inggris/article/view/5706 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 14:47:12 +0700 The Use of Politeness Strategies Based on Gender Differences in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Movie: A Socio-Pragmatic Study https://jurnal.polban.ac.id/ojs-3.1.2/inggris/article/view/5736
This research focuses on the use of politeness strategies based on gender differences in the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
