Abstract

An experimental study to investigate the performance of a vehicle air-conditioning system (VAC) is presented. Forthis aim, an experimental system consisting of original components from an HFC134a VAC system such ascompressor, condenser, evaporator, fan blower, radiator, alternator, electric motor, which acts as a vehicle’sengine has been set up and instrumented over experimental rig which simulated the actual car as a passengercompartment. The speed will be varied in the range 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 rpm. The measurements willtake during the one-hour periods within a one-minute time interval for temperature set-point of 21 and 220C withinternal heat loads 0 and 1000 Watts. The results indicated that the higher the internal heat load, the smaller is thevalue of COP. A high COP at a lower internal heat load is mostly due to the small compressor power consumptioncompared with that at a higher internal heat load. The lower the temperature setpoint the higher is the energyconsumption. When the compressor power consumption increases, the COP decreases with the increase of theinternal heat load.
