Abstract

An experimental investigation was carried out with a view to achieve energy saving in a vehicl eair-conditioning (AC) system. The experimental set-up consists of original components from the air-conditioning system of a compact passenger vehicle. The experiments were conducted with temperature settings of 22 and 23oC for the conditioned space and internal heat loads of 0, 1 and 2 kW. This study demonstrated the application of the thermostat (on/off) and fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) for the reduction of energy consumption. The space temperature and speed of the compressor were varied and an energy consumption analysis was carried out for the AC system. The experimental results showed that significant energy savings could be obtained through the use of the controllers for the two temperature settings and three internal heat loads. The results also indicated that the proposed FLC gave a better result in maintaining the cabin temperature at acceptable levels by varying the compressor speed resulting in significant energy saving.
